Sometimes the health and safety competency of staff is assessed as part of a formal training course (e.g. in first aid, where the trainer/ examiner determines health and safety competency at the end of the course).
However, sometimes line managers will need to identify and check that staff have achieved the health and safety competencies they need for specific topics, e.g. through inspections or risk assessments.
The competency logs attached at the bottom of this page are examples to help line managers ask the right questions to assess a staff member’s health and safety competencies. They show a simple approach that you could use to make an assessment and record the information.
