Window on Wellbeing Week 2023

10:00 – 11:00 | Prenatal Movement Session with Fran | In Person
Fran will guide you through some safe movements that can help increase overall strength and decrease discomfort during pregnancy. The movements are Pilates based, focusing on postural changes that occur during pregnancy such as stretching the hips and strengthening specific areas to increase stability around the glutes and pelvis.
Please wear comfortable clothing and bring a drink of water with you. After booking and prior to attending the session, Fran will contact you to discuss where you are in your pregnancy.
Please note, this is only suitable for those who are past 12 weeks of pregnancy with no complications.
12:00 – 13:00 | Beginners Climbing Taster | In Person
Hosted by the Get Out, Get Active Team this climbing wall session is ideal for beginners, and those who have already tried climbing. It provides an opportunity for you to progress with the necessary skills and knowledge onto our Learn to Climb Courses and outdoor climbing trips. This session will show you the basics of climbing, from scaling 8m high walls to coming back down safely. You will also learn about climbing movement skills, helping you complete some of our graded climbing routes with style. No experience is necessary and all equipment is provided.
Venue: The Edge Climbing Wall.

12:05 – 12:45 | Wellbeing Run Club Taster | In Person
The Wellbeing Run Club meets every Tuesday at 12:05pm. Whether you've just started running or are looking for something flexible to fit around your schedule, everyone is welcome. Run Leaders will guide you through the session which is designed as an introduction or stepping stone towards perhaps taking up a regular session with the group beyond the Window on Wellbeing Week.
Please come ready changed in comfortable clothing to run in, trainers and some water.
Meet at the The Edge reception, Willow Terrace. Lockers are available – you’ll need a token or £1 coin.
12:10 – 12:50 | RSPB Guided Campus Walk | In Person
It's a welcome return to our campus for the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB), who will have a stall in the University precinct from Monday to Wednesday opposite the Refectory Steps.
Take a break to appreciate the campus and join a informed, guided walk led by experts from the RSPB with a focus on local wildlife and nature. Please wear comfortable clothes and footwear and maybe bring a water bottle.

12:30 – 13:00 | Full Body Posture Session | In Person
Join Exercise Referral Instructor Lucy for a Full Body Posture session which will include mobility and activation stretches for the common problem areas in your body linked to prolonged periods of sitting/standing. Lucy will teach you how to stretch your 'overactive' muscles and strengthen the 'lazy ones'. Please wear comfortable clothing and bring a drink of water with you.
13:00 – 14:00 | Mini Meadows Masterclass | In Person
The Sustainability Service and Seb Stroud, PhD student in the Faculty of Biological Sciences, are collaborating to run a mini meadows masterclass on campus as part of Window on Wellbeing Week. During the session, you will have the opportunity to use quadrats in the different meadow spaces on campus to help survey and identify different plants. You will learn some basic botany language that will assist you with identifying plants in the UK on your summer walks or during botanical surveys.

Join Charlotte for an inclusive pilates session which will focus specifically on you and your body to help you find the exercises and equipment that work best for you. All mats and equipment will be provided.

Join our expert guide Laura Wilson as she explores an accessible route around some of the many campus artworks. Learn about the back story and artists of the installations at a gentle pace. The guided walk will take approximately 40 minutes returning to central campus to finish. Please wear comfortable shoes and bring a water bottle.

14:00 – 17:00 | Bodington Cycle Circuit Taster | In Person
A great opportunity to have a free pedal round the Bodington Cycle Circuit. Bikes and helmets are provided or feel free to bring your own! There’s no need to book, just turn up.

16:00 – 16:15 | Bitesize Lower Body Posture Session | Online
Are you struggling with your posture? Do you regularly experience aches and pains?
Join Fran from Sport and Physical Activity for a 15-minute lower body postural session which targets stiffness in your legs, often linked with desk-based jobs.
16:00 – 16:50 | Pilates on the Foam Roller | In Person
This utilises common Pilates exercises alongside the foam roller to create challenge and variety. The use of Foam Rollers can help increase range of movement, strength, co-ordination and aid massage. All equipment is provided.

16:30 – 17:00 | Qigong | Online
Hosted by instructor Xiao, experience the effects of slow-flowing physical movement, deep rhythmic breathing and calming meditation used in Qigong to promote health, spirituality and wellbeing. With its roots in Chinese medicine and philosophy, the exercises involve coordinated movements and breathing patterns to regulate the body and mind to lower stress, anxiety, increase focus and improve balance and flexibility.
