Health and safety is a key priority for the University. In order to keep yourself and those around you safe and healthy, you will need to complete the following resources when you start studying at University of Leeds.  Health and safety is a continuous process and it is essential for everyone to be ‘managing risk together’ to provide a safe and productive environment to study live and work.   

Your role is essential in playing an active role in our commitment to develop the philosophy of as an automatic way in which we work across all of our sites.

These have been produced as an introduction on how to stay safe here at the University. A number of copies have been distributed to tutors as well as available online.  They are your guide on how to stay safe while at the University.  

Student Induction Videos 

There are a series of induction videos which are a general introduction to university life and how to stay safe and make the most of your time here. 

Watch - You and Me: Student health and safety at the University of Leeds (also available with subtitles)

This video demonstrates the importance for all to be involved in, and aware of health and safety and how it is important to understand that it can affect anyone.  You will need to always be aware of fire procedures, evacuation routes and first aid arrangements to ensure you can help maintain health and safety for yourself and those around you.  

Watch - You and Me: Laboratory health and safety for students (also available with subtitles)

This video is a specific guide for people working in laboratories, and other more dangerous areas of the University.  It has been designed as an overview of the University and the role health and safety has on the measures in place to understand and manage risks to help prevent unnecessary situations occurring.  

Some areas, such as laboratories or workshops, will require you to undertake additional training. This will be organised locally and this will be arranged by your tutor or health and safety manager.

This video is an introduction to how you can stay healthy and safe while studying at the University whilst maximising productivity and achievements.   It is essential for you to look after your psychological and physical health in all areas of your life and especially when working with more hazardous environments such as with chemicals and biological agents.  It identifies and highlights the support available at the University and how this can be accessed to enhance your time with the University of Leeds.

Online Training Modules 

We recommend all students complete the online training modules available.  

Students’ online training system

These modules will help you to know what to do in the event of a fire and how to set up your workstations correctly to avoid injury.  

Some courses, such as science and engineering courses will require you to complete additional local training specific to your subject area. This will be organised by your Academic Tutor or Supervisor.
