Confidential Staff Counselling

If you are struggling and feel you are in need of some support, the Staff Counselling and Psychological Support Service is here to help. We provide confidential, (Confidentiality statement) free, professional counselling for any member of staff experiencing personal and/or work-related challenges. We are dedicated to offering the best possible support in a way that suit you - appointments are available by Zoom, by phone, or in-person from our rooms in University House.

Initial staff counselling consultation

Your initial consultation provides a safe place to share and take stock of what is troubling you. Your counsellor will help you explore how you are feeling and identify the issues that are affecting you. They will help you gain different perspectives, explore coping strategies and suggest possible ways forward according to your particular situation. The appointment will usually last for 50 minutes.

If the issues are affecting your work, or work issues are the problem, you may find useful the University guidance on Supporting mental health for staff and our role-based training and workshops.

Staff counselling sessions

Further sessions will support you in exploring these issues further, helping to bring about changes in thought, emotion, and behaviour. They may include psychoeducation materials and guided self-help, or provide you with the space and support to think things through. If the issues affecting you are associated with a role in which you support other staff, the focus of your sessions may be more role-based.

Role-based consultation and psychological support

Many work roles involve managing or supporting others and sometimes the dynamics between different people can be emotionally challenging. If you have a particular issue or aspect of your work that you are finding difficult, then you may wish to have a role-based consultation.

Our counsellors can provide role-based, one-to-one consultation and psychological support to help you gain a deeper understanding of situations, how best to deal with them and consider your responses within the boundaries of your particular role. A group of staff with similar roles facing a particular challenge may also request a group, role-based consultation.
