USHA conference with the University of Leeds, a resounding success!

In the last week of April 2017, the Universities Safety and Health Association (USHA) in conjunction with Health and Safety Services, held their annual conference in Leeds. The conference was a resounding success with record attendance, excellent speakers and plenty of networking opportunities.

Our Vice-Chancellor, Sir Alan Langlands, the Lord Mayor of Leeds Gerry Harper, and Malcolm Brown, British Triathlon Performance Coach, all welcomed delegates and high profile speakers from industry, the legal and university sectors to the conference.

Topics under discussion included the Health and Safety Executive’s expectations for the future, the legal implications on health and safety of leaving the EU, global corporate health and safety versus a modern academic institution, emergency planning at major critical incidents, change management and generational issues, international travel and the USHA fieldwork safety guidance and the role of health and safety in organisational strategy development.

Evening events included University of Leeds alumni and comedian Alistair McGowan entertaining delegates at a Gala dinner in the University’s Great Hall, and University of Leeds staff member Simon Jenkins giving a rousing introduction to the success of local brewing enterprises.

Paul Veevers, Head of Health and Safety at the University said:

‘We were delighted with the success of the annual conference.  Delegates from universities across the UK shared knowledge, experience and ideas, and were inspired by the speakers…  and of course the fantastic Gala dinner provided by University Conferencing and Events in the Great Hall was the icing on the cake!’
